Kentucky Launches Friends of Agriculture License Plate

Kentucky Launches Friends of Agriculture License Plate

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky motorists now have a new way to celebrate the state’s rich farming heritage with the launch of the “Friends of Agriculture” specialty license plate. Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell announced that the plate is available for all vehicle owners statewide.

“Kentucky is beautiful, and Kentucky agriculture is a special way of life for many,” Commissioner Shell said. “This new plate allows everyone to showcase their appreciation for farming and all it brings to this state and community. It’s a simple way to show your pride and enthusiasm for the agricultural lifestyle.”

The plate became available following the passage of House Bill 157 during the 2025 legislative session. Sponsored by Reps. Ken Upchurch, Adam Moore, and Mitch Whitaker, the measure broadened eligibility for agriculture-themed plates.

Previously, farm plates were limited to qualified farm vehicles. The new “Friends of Agriculture” plate does not replace the traditional farm plate but instead offers another option for supporters who do not meet farm vehicle requirements.

Students from FFA and 4-H programs across Kentucky submitted artwork for the design. The final selection features rolling farmland with an American flag in the corner, inspired by entries from Caden Penn of Crittenden County High School and Alyssa Woodard of Henderson County High School. Each student received a $250 prize for their winning concepts.

“As long as I can remember, I’ve used it when making things,” she said. “I used the American flag in the background to add some personality.”

A $10 fee from each plate purchase and renewal will support the Ag Tag fund, benefiting Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

Funds help provide scholarships, leadership opportunities, FFA jackets, travel assistance, and support programs such as the Ag Athlete of the Year awards and Farm to School initiatives.

The new plate is available at county clerk offices statewide and online through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
