UK Students Host Annual Lawnmower Service Clinic

By Blake Jackson

Equipment that sits idle through the winter often needs attention before returning to regular use. With mowing season approaching, students from the University of Kentucky’s Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering program are gearing up for their annual lawnmower service clinic.

The clinic is the largest fundraiser of the year for the university’s chapter of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).

The event will take place March 5 and 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST at the UK Ag. Machine Research Lab, located at 411 Stadium View Drive. Community members can bring in their push mowers for servicing at a cost of $50 per mower. Spark plug replacement will also be offered for an additional $5.

The standard service includes a thorough cleaning of the mower and air filter, sharpening and balancing the blade, and changing the oil. Owners must pick up their serviced mowers between 9 a.m. and noon on March 7 or 8.

“The best part of the event is how appreciative the customers are for helping them get ready for mowing seasons,” said Czarena Crofcheck, BAE professor at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “We have customers who have been bringing their mowers to the lawnmower clinic for 15 years.”
