Kentucky picks panel for food system grants

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's agriculture commissioner has appointed a panel to evaluate applications for the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program. This program aims to strengthen the state's food supply chain by awarding grants to improve infrastructure and equipment.

"This panel will play a crucial role in selecting the best projects to enhance our food system and agricultural output," said Commissioner Shell. The $8.6 million in grant funding from the USDA targets projects that:

  • Boost Resilience: Improve the reliability and efficiency of Kentucky's food supply chain.
  • Expand Markets: Provide small farms and food businesses with better access to markets.
  • Support Value-Added Products: Encourage the development of new and innovative food products.
  • Create Jobs: Generate fair-paying employment opportunities within the food system.

Kentucky received a significant response to the program, with 138 applications requesting over $39 million in funding. The review panel will analyze these proposals to identify projects that best align with the program's goals of promoting:

  • Agricultural Efficiency: Optimizing farm production and resource utilization.
  • Market Diversification: Creating a wider range of marketing channels for Kentucky agricultural products.

The panel consists of individuals with diverse expertise in Kentucky's agricultural landscape:

  • Tyler Ferguson: A farmer and leader within the Kentucky Farm Bureau.
  • Mike Jackson: Founder of a Kentucky produce company and manager of a prominent farmers market.
  • Randy Marcum: County leader with a deep understanding of local agricultural needs.
  • Dr. Tim Woods: University of Kentucky professor specializing in agricultural extension services.
  • Ashton Potter Wright: Executive Director of a University of Kentucky program connecting farmers with markets.

The review process will begin shortly, with project recipients notified upon selection. This initiative holds promise for strengthening Kentucky's food system and creating a more vibrant agricultural sector.
