Microbial nitrogen - a sustainable boost for corn yields

Microbial nitrogen - a sustainable boost for corn yields

By Blake Jackson

A recent study by the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment found promising results for microbial nitrogen as a sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers. The research, part of a larger initiative involving over 400 trials, investigated the effectiveness of Pivot Bio PROVEN® 40 in corn production.

The study revealed that replacing 40 pounds of synthetic nitrogen with PROVEN® 40 resulted in increased corn yields, even under challenging conditions. This is particularly noteworthy given the use of cover crops, which can compete with corn for available nitrogen.

Richard Preston, a Kentucky farmer involved in the study, highlighted the benefits of PROVEN® 40. He emphasized its ability to improve yields, reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, and contribute to sustainable farming practices. Preston, who already utilizes no-till and cover crop practices, observed an average yield increase of 11 bushels per acre with PROVEN® 40 compared to control plots.

The study findings suggest that applying PROVEN® 40 in furrow delivers nitrogen directly to corn roots, avoiding competition with cover crop residue. This approach can be particularly beneficial in maintaining or increasing yields while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers.

Similar positive results were observed in studies conducted at North Carolina State University. Replacing synthetic nitrogen with PROVEN® 40 led to increased nitrogen and potassium uptake in corn, ultimately contributing to greater biomass and potentially higher yields.

Clayton Nevins, senior agronomic scientist at Pivot Bio, emphasized the significance of these findings. He explained how PROVEN® 40 not only replaces synthetic nitrogen but also delivers it directly to the roots, promoting plant health throughout the growing season.

Pivot Bio, the company behind PROVEN® 40, is committed to developing sustainable agricultural solutions. Their products aim to address the challenges of food security and environmental impact associated with traditional nitrogen fertilization. By offering weatherproof, safer, and environmentally friendly alternatives, Pivot Bio is striving to transform the agricultural landscape.

This research signifies a significant step forward in the development of sustainable agricultural practices. Microbial nitrogen solutions like PROVEN® 40 hold the potential to revolutionize the way we grow food, ensuring both productivity and environmental responsibility.
