Kentucky Children's Hospital, Safe Kids Fayette County and other community organizations will host Safe Kids Day on June 21, a community event to promote awareness on child injury prevention. The event is free and open to the public and will be held at Lexington's Charles Young Center from 4 to 7 p.m.
"The season between June 1st and August 31st is known as the '100 deadliest days of summer,'" said Sherri Hannan, coordinator of Safe Kids Fayette County. "Kids spend time in the water, walking or riding bikes in their neighborhood and just enjoying their break from school. All that can change quickly without the use of safety devices or following safe practices."
Safety experts and medical providers will be available for information and demonstrations, including:
- car seat installation inspection;
- what to do in the event of a house fire;
- water safety;
- helmet fittings and bike safety rodeo; and
- how to obtain a child ID.
Families can also enjoy snacks, balloon animals and face painting.
"We appreciate any opportunity to interact with the community and provide potentially lifesaving information," said Hannan. "We want kids to be active and play and with an event like Safe Kids Day, we can demonstrate how they can enjoy their favorite activities safely."
