Webinar to Provide Tips for Beginning Goat and Sheep Farmers

A webinar hosted by the University of Minnesota Extension will provide insight into the process of beginning to raise goats and sheep. The free Zoom webinar will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 10. Beginning farmers, 4-H members, agriculture business professionals and those interested in sheep or goats are invited to attend.

"Beginning farmers and farmers looking to diversify their livestock operation have heard that sheep and goats can be a profit center as the demand for lamb and chevon have increased," says Travis Hoffman, Extension sheep specialist for North Dakota State University Extension and University of Minnesota Extension.

Webinar participants will hear from beginning farmers on how they started raising sheep or goats. Presenters will share their planning process and the lessons they learned along the way as they learned how to feed, house, care for and market small ruminants.

Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension educator, has seen an uptick in people interested in raising sheep and goats.

"Raising sheep and goats is a great way to start a small livestock operation, a hobby farm or begin a 4-H project," says Miller.

This is the third session in a monthly series of webinars addressing the needs of new beginning sheep and goat farmers.

If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Miller at nesl4220@umn.edu or Colleen Carlson at traxl042@umn.edu.
