2026 Kentucky Junior Chef Competition Now Open

2026 Kentucky Junior Chef Competition Now Open

By Blake Jackson

The 2026 Kentucky Junior Chef Competition is officially open, announced by Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell.

“Young chefs across the state can begin preparing for this year’s Junior Chef challenge,” Commissioner Shell said. “The culinary skills our young chefs have showcased throughout the years is just a fraction of their ability to create delicious recipes with wonderful Kentucky products.”

The Junior Chef program is designed to inspire students to learn cooking skills using locally sourced ingredients while promoting healthy eating. Participants also gain experience in agriculture, teamwork, organization, marketing, and community involvement.

This competition is part of the Kentucky Proud Farm to School Program, which helps schools across the state purchase local foods. By participating, children enjoy fresh, nutritious meals that support healthy growth, while Kentucky farmers gain an additional market for their products. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) manages both the Farm to School Program and the Junior Chef competition.

With the 2026 season underway, students and coaches can start forming teams and developing recipes featuring Kentucky-grown ingredients. State-level winners have the opportunity to earn scholarships to culinary schools, with the top team advancing to the Southeast Region Junior Chef Competition for further scholarship opportunities.

Students interested in competing must submit their intent to participate and a recipe concept by May 30, 2026. Detailed rules and guidelines are available in the Kentucky Junior Chef Handbook on the Junior Chef website at kyagr.com/junior-chef under the “What to Know” section.

From June through September, teams will finalize recipes, attend workshops with KDA chefs, and submit nutritional analyses for review. Final submissions, including recipe packets, shopping lists, photos, taste test results, work plans, and the entry fee, are due to KDA by October 1, 2026.

The 2026 Kentucky Junior Chef State Competition will be held November 12-13 at Sullivan University in Lexington.
