Founded in 2011 by a small group of farmers and community leaders, Community Farmers Market (CFM) in Bowling Green, Kentucky, began with just six vendors in a parking lot.
Since then, it has expanded into a thriving year-round market with over 40 vendors, reshaping how farmers markets can operate and support communities.
A Year-Round Hub for Local Vendors
CFM stands apart from traditional seasonal markets by offering an indoor, year-round venue. This setup allows farmers, artisans, bakers, and food producers to establish permanent, professional booths.
“Our indoor space has provided stability and opportunity for both vendors and customers,” the CFM team explains. “It not only boosts vendor sales but also supports the growth of their individual brands and businesses.”
More than just a market, CFM hosts seasonal events, cooking demos, and educational programs, creating a lively, inclusive space that deepens community ties.
Championing Food Equity and Access
CFM has prioritized accessibility since its inception. It was the first farmers market in Kentucky to accept SNAP, WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), and Senior FMNP benefits, while also participating in the Kentucky Double Dollars (KDD) incentive.
“We’ve always believed fresh, local food should be accessible to everyone,” says the CFM team. “Programs like Community Farm Alliance’s KDD and FreshRx for MOMs have been essential in making that belief a reality.”
Their leadership in initiatives like FreshRx for MOMs a produce prescription program that expanded statewide highlights CFM’s commitment to health equity.
A Longstanding Partnership with KCARD
CFM credits much of its success to its enduring partnership with the Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (KCARD).
“We’ve been working with KCARD since our founding,” they note. “Their name quickly became synonymous with support and strategy for agricultural businesses in Kentucky.”
KCARD has provided crucial assistance with grant funding, facility improvements, and strategic planning. “KCARD has been an invaluable partner throughout our growth,” says CFM.
As CFM continues to grow, its vision remains bold: to become a national model of how local food systems can meet daily needs while promoting equity and sustainability.
