Final Compost Batch Now Available at Daviess Landfill

Final Compost Batch Now Available at Daviess Landfill

By Blake Jackson

The Daviess County Landfill has announced the release of its final compost batch for the year, offering a nutrient-rich product perfect for gardening and landscaping projects.

The compost is created through a detailed process that begins with the collection of leaves from curbsides throughout Owensboro.

According to Solid Waste Manager Travis Ricker, the composting process involves mixing collected leaves with biosolids. These biosolids contain beneficial microorganisms that help break down the organic material and generate heat during decomposition.

For the compost to be considered ready for use, it must maintain a temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two weeks. Once this requirement is met, the compost is screened and prepared for distribution.

Residents interested in purchasing compost can visit the Daviess County Landfill, located at 7772 Kentucky Highway 815. The facility operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to Noon. Compost is available at a cost of $22.00 per cubic yard.

This final release of the season provides a great opportunity for homeowners, gardeners, and landscapers to stock up on high-quality compost while supplies last.
