Kentucky Ag teachers benefit from gate to plate program

Kentucky high school agriculture teachers enjoyed a unique learning opportunity at the Gate to Plate program. This three-day event, hosted by the University of Kentucky, provided teachers with a chance to deepen their knowledge of meat production and processing.

The program stemmed from the success of previous meat production workshops. It was a collaborative effort between UK's College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the Kentucky Beef Council, and the Kentucky Department of Education.

Teachers participated in lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. These sessions covered topics like cow-calf operations, animal harvesting, meat processing, and food preparation. Participants also visited local farms, stockyards, and the UK Meats Lab.

Teachers gained valuable new information and resources to enhance their classroom curriculum. "I have so much more to share with my students now," said Brittany Forgey, an agriculture teacher. This program helped bridge the gap between theory and practical application in agricultural education.

Gate to Plate wasn't just about academics – it also served as a recruitment tool for the University of Kentucky. Teachers stayed on campus, experiencing dorm life and modern college facilities. This exposure could potentially influence their students' college decisions.

The program's benefits extend beyond the classroom. By equipping teachers with current knowledge, Gate to Plate contributes to developing a skilled workforce in the meat and food system. It also strengthens the agricultural industry, according to UK associate professor Rebekah Epps.

The success of Gate to Plate hinged on collaboration between various organizations. The Kentucky Beef Council played a key role in curriculum development, program promotion, and cost-share benefits. They also provided participants with educational materials and, of course, plenty of beef for hands-on learning and delicious meals.

By bringing together experts, educators, and industry partners, Gate to Plate serves as a valuable model for professional development in agricultural education.
