Kentucky families get holiday hope with grocery boxes

By Blake Jackson

The Kentucky Dream Center and Mercy Chefs, a Virginia-based disaster relief group, are teaming up with several organizations to bring a little holiday cheer to families in Western Kentucky still recovering from various 2021 disasters.

"The simple gesture of a box of groceries during the holiday season can bring about that spark of hope that we all need when we are going through a loss," said Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles. "We're proud to partner with these fine organizations to bring hope home to these families."

This event, made possible by Mercy Chefs' "Send Hope Home" initiative, will distribute grocery boxes filled with proteins, fresh produce, pantry staples, and simple recipes, enough to serve 20 meals. The boxes will be distributed drive-thru style on Saturday, December 16th, 2023, from 2-4 PM at Dawson Springs Elementary School.

"We're grateful for our partners and teams of volunteers who help provide hope in times of need," said Kentucky Dream Center Executive Director Christina Garrott. "We are blessed to be given this opportunity to lift up our neighbors and ease their burden during the holiday season."

"This community has been through a lot in the past two years," said Joel Cauley, Mercy Chefs' director of Church Partnerships. "We know the impact of these storms lasts for years, which is why we keep serving in Western Kentucky. We want to remind everyone they are not forgotten and hope these boxes make things a little easier as they enjoy the holidays."

Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend this event and receive a box of groceries. The produce-filled boxes will be complemented with Kentucky Legend hams and bacon, donated by SFG Specialty Foods Group, LLC.

Together, these organizations are committed to supporting the Western Kentucky community and bringing a sense of normalcy and joy during the holiday season.
