Kentucky lamb month - celebrating a resurgent industry

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky is raising a glass to its sheep and lamb producers this February, as the state commemorates Lamb Month. Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell highlights the industry's valuable contribution, praising the versatility of sheep and the deliciousness of lamb.

While lamb's protein-packed qualities are well-known, the industry extends far beyond dinner plates. Kentucky boasts over 4,000 sheep producers caring for 70,000 sheep, ranking 23rd nationally. These gentle animals provide not only meat but also wool for fiber and lanolin for cosmetics. Additionally, they help control weeds, maintain forests, and prevent wildfires.

Kentucky's sheep industry has a rich history, with numbers peaking over a million in the mid-20th century. After a decline, the industry is experiencing a resurgence, thanks in part to the Kentucky Sheep and Wool Producers Association and the American Sheep Industry Association. Sheep numbers have increased by 51% in the past five years, with producers retaining breeding stock to further boost production.

The industry contributes over $7 million to Kentucky's agricultural revenue. Market lambs and sheep remained stable in 2023, while breeding stock saw an increase. This, combined with growing retail demand, grazing opportunities, and value-added wool products, paints a bright picture for the future.

Lamb's nutritional value, including iron, riboflavin, and B vitamins, makes it a healthy choice. But its impact goes beyond the plate. Gentle lambs often become favorites in show rings, teaching valuable life skills and fostering enthusiasm among participants. Notably, Kentucky State Fair's Sunshine classes offer individuals with special needs the chance to work with sheep and showcase their skills, promoting inclusivity and community engagement.

As Kentucky celebrates its thriving sheep and lamb industry, remember to consider incorporating lamb into your meals this February. It's delicious taste and versatility, combined with the positive impact it has on Kentucky's farms and communities, make it a choice worth celebrating.

To celebrate Lamb Month, the Kentucky Sheep and Goat Development Office offers information on its website about versatile livestock. The website also offers a buyer's guide for lamb at: https://www.kysheepandgoat.org/on-your-plate.
