Kentucky offers online woodland owner course

By Blake Jackson

The University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment is pleased to announce the 2024 Kentucky Woodland Owners Short Course (WOSC). This comprehensive program empowers woodland owners with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage and preserve their valuable resources.

The WOSC offers a convenient format, featuring five informative online sessions held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 PM EDT, commencing June 11th. These sessions delve into critical topics such as woodland management processes, tree identification, climate change's impact on woodlands, and the vital connection between wildlife and woodlands.

Additionally, the course explores the role of carbon sequestration and how National Resource Conservation Service programs can support woodland health and water quality.

Following the online sessions, participants can attend one of two hands-on field experiences. Scheduled for July 13th at the UK Robinson Forest and August 10th at Roundstone Native Seed, these sessions provide a unique opportunity to witness effective woodland and wildlife management practices in action. Participants will have the chance to interact with natural resource professionals and gain practical insights for implementing these practices in their own woodlands.

"The WOSC offers a unique and valuable learning experience for woodland owners," says Billy Thomas, extension forester. "Participants gain a wealth of knowledge about caring for their woodlands and establish connections with natural resource professionals who can provide ongoing support and guidance."

Enrollment for the 2024 Kentucky Woodland Owners Short Course is now open. Due to limited space, interested parties are encouraged to register early. To learn more about WOSC, including registration, visit https://wosc.ca.uky.edu/2024WOSC.
