As winter thaws and spring approaches, Kentucky's horse enthusiasts and farm operators are eager to prepare their pastures for the grazing season. The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service (CES) is here to help with their annual "Pastures Please!!" event, taking place on March 5th in Georgetown.
This informative session, geared towards equine owners and farm managers, will delve into the latest best practices for pasture management. Experts from the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment will share their knowledge on various topics, including:
- Strategic herbicide use for effective weed control: Learn how to manage unwanted plants without harming your valuable pastures.
- Rescuing pastures for short-term use: Discover techniques to revitalize stressed or damaged pastures for quick grazing opportunities.
- Optimizing pasture fertilization: Gain insights on choosing the right fertilizers and application methods for your specific needs.
"We want to empower producers with the knowledge to make sustainable and profitable decisions for their farms," says Beau Neal, Woodford County agriculture and natural resources agent. "The information shared at Pastures Please!! can be applied in multiple ways, ultimately benefiting both the horses and the overall operation."
This year's event marks the 17th edition of Pastures Please!!, a testament to its value as an educational resource for horse owners. Initiated in 2007 by CES agents, the program consistently delivers relevant and actionable information to help participants manage their pastures effectively.
Attendees can register for this complimentary session at www.tinyurl.com/pasturesplease or contact the Scott County office by email at scott.ext@uky.edu or phone at (502) 863-0984 for further details. The Scott County extension office is at 1130 Cincinnati Road in Georgetown.
