Women Shaping the Future of Agriculture

Women Shaping the Future of Agriculture

By Jamie Martin

Thirty six percent of the nation’s agricultural producers are women, showing their essential role in the agriculture sector. Even though women contribute almost half of the world’s food supply, many still encounter challenges related to land access, resources and leadership recognition. To address these issues, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and partner organizations have introduced a central information hub to advance and celebrate women in agriculture.

The hub was launched on October 15 in recognition of the International Day of Rural Women. It brings together programs and resources designed to support learning, collaboration and visibility for women involved in farming and agribusiness. One of the main features of this initiative is the National Women in Agriculture Study led by the American Farm Bureau Federation. The study will examine participation, leadership and barriers affecting women in agriculture across the United States.

“The International Year of the Woman Farmer provides an opportunity to honor and empower women shaping the future of agriculture,” said NASDA President Amanda Beal. “Through collaboration with these key stakeholders in the agriculture industry, we can highlight the achievements and challenges of women farmers while building resources that can inspire meaningful change.”

USDA reports from 2022 show that 1.2 million women are engaged in farming nationwide. The study will help organizations understand how to improve support systems, increase opportunities and strengthen engagement for women in agriculture. Individuals can participate in the survey by visiting nasda.org/IYWF.

The working group includes organizations representing crop and livestock sectors, young farmers, conservation, education and agricultural leadership. These partners are also preparing for the International Year of the Woman Farmer ACE Summit, scheduled for June 1 to 3, 2026 in Washington DC. The summit will provide workshops, networking and advocacy training for women working in agriculture. The results of the national study will be highlighted during the event.

These initiatives demonstrate a nationwide commitment to recognizing the contributions of women and ensuring they have the tools needed to succeed and lead in the agriculture industry.
