Boost Your Career with Peer Leadership

Boost Your Career with Peer Leadership

By Blake Jackson

A unique program is helping students develop leadership, mentorship, and teaching skills to meet workforce demands. The Peer Instructor Program, launched in 2022, provides hands-on experience for students interested in guiding and supporting their peers while building transferable skills.

This initiative is open to students who have completed an introductory course in agriculture, food, and the environment. Those who meet academic standards and are eager to learn and grow can apply for the program. Participants assist new students by facilitating discussions, answering questions, and organizing interactive activities to create an engaging learning environment.

“I decided to apply for the position because I wanted to guide incoming freshman and help them acclimate to their new environment,” said Brooke Hall, a community and leadership development junior. “I attended my class’s meetings during the week to develop icebreakers, answer questions, facilitate class discussion and support my instructor. I would also attend a class meeting for the current cohort of peer instructors to examine and enhance our leadership skills.”

Program coordinators highlight the personal and professional growth students experience through this initiative. By stepping out of their comfort zones, participants gain confidence and develop essential skills like conflict management, teamwork, and career planning. Many students recognize the program as a stepping stone toward their future careers, helping them build a strong foundation in leadership.

Beyond the classroom, peer instructors have opportunities to engage with industry professionals. In 2024, participants organized and moderated a panel discussion featuring leaders from the livestock industry. They developed interview questions, introduced speakers, and facilitated discussions, offering valuable networking and public speaking experience.

This program extends beyond agricultural studies, equipping students with skills relevant to various career paths. It also fulfills experiential learning requirements, adding value to students' academic journeys. Participants describe their experiences as transformative, allowing them to practice public speaking, build confidence, and prepare for their future careers.

Students interested in joining the program can apply for the upcoming cohort. The deadline for the Fall 2025 session is March 3. For more details and application information, visit the website.

This initiative continues to empower students, fostering leadership and personal growth while preparing them for success in diverse professional fields.
