Celebrate trees - Kentucky tree week goes statewide

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky's Urban Forest Initiative (UFI) brings back Tree Week this October, offering a wider range of events across the state.

From bustling cities like Lexington and Louisville to charming towns like Wayland, communities can celebrate trees and the environment together.

“What’s so amazing about Tree Week is how it engages people of all ages,” said Ignazio Graziosi, program coordinator of UFI, part of the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “Whether it’s families attending tree walks or students participating in tree plantings, there’s something for everyone.”

Expanding Tree Week's Reach

“This year is special because Tree Week is going statewide,” Graziosi said. “We’re not just focusing on Lexington smaller communities are taking part, and it’s great to see. It’s incredible to see how many communities are excited to join. UFI believes that trees create stronger, more vibrant communities.

For instance, Wayland is planting American Sycamore and Dogwood trees around new housing developments, along with a mapped tree walk to connect different town areas. It's a simple yet powerful way to unite people through nature.

UFI has collaborated with over 100 local organizations to create this statewide network. Together, they're dedicated to preserving and caring for Kentucky's urban and rural forests.

The celebration kicks off on October 11th with events at the University of Kentucky. Highlights include "Tree Story Time Walks," tree health walks, and a screening of "The Lorax" to raise awareness about trees' importance.

Beyond campus, breweries and nature sanctuaries are also hosting unique events. Don't miss "Forest Bugs and Brews" at Mirror Twin Brewery on October 17th or the "Night Adventure" at McConnell Springs on October 18th.

Lexington's Tree Week runs from October 11th-20th with over 40 events. Highlights include a kick-off tree planting and the "American Chestnut Revival" at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary.
