Dry weather hits Kentucky crops

Kentucky experienced dry conditions and below-normal temperatures during the week ending September 15, 2024. Rainfall totaled 0.56 inches, 0.32 inches below normal.

Temperatures averaged 70 degrees, 1 degree below normal. Soil moisture conditions remain short, with topsoil rated 30% very short, 44% short, and subsoil rated 25% very short, 51% short. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 6.0 out of a possible seven.

Crop Progress:

  • Corn: 78% of corn is mature and 33% harvested, well ahead of the five-year averages. Corn condition remains mostly steady, with 77% rated good or excellent.
  • Soybeans: 69% of soybeans are coloring, and 41% are dropping leaves. Soybean condition has declined slightly, with 56% rated good or excellent.
  • Tobacco: 77% of tobacco has been cut, and 57% of housed tobacco is in fair condition. Dry weather has impacted curing conditions for the burley crop.

Pasture Conditions:

  • Pasture conditions are poor due to drought, with only 34% rated good or excellent. Producers are supplementing it with hay, and natural water sources are running low.
