Join Heart of America grazing conference 2024

By Blake Jackson

The University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment is hosting the 2024 Heart of America Grazing Conference, a regional event that rotates annually among Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri.

This year's conference will take place at the Hardin County Extension Office in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, from October 15-17.

The three-day conference offers participants the opportunity to learn about various regenerative agricultural practices, including pasture ecology, soil health, hay and storage feed, forage research, baleage, and extended grazing systems.

“This event will illustrate emerging science and research practice by bringing abstract concepts to life,” said Chris Teutsch, forage specialist and extension associate professor at Martin-Gatton CAFE. “Kentucky has some of the best grass in the country. Producers will have a great opportunity to learn more regenerative agricultural and grazing practices on beautiful farms and facilities in Kentucky.”

The conference features a dynamic lineup of speakers, including UK specialists, industry representatives, and Kentucky producers. The agenda includes:

  • Pasture Ecology Workshop (October 15): Join a guided tour of Glenmar Farms, a regenerative cow-calf operation, led by Matt Poore from North Carolina State University. Learn about ecological systems and attend the Heart of America Banquet featuring a keynote speech by Jimmy Henning and awards for individuals dedicated to promoting regenerative agriculture.
  • Heart of America Grazing Conference (October 16): Attend educational seminars presented by industry experts and UK faculty. The keynote speaker, Ray Archuleta, will discuss regenerative agriculture best practices, while Greg Brann will share his expertise on multi-species grazing.
  • Pasture Walk at Greg Brann's Big Springs Farm (October 17): Experience a multi-species grazing operation and learn from Greg and Debbie Brann, renowned experts in soil health. Explore their dairy, silvopasture establishment, and discuss grass management practices.
