Merging British heritage with Kentucky spirit, Blacklion Vodka is an unlikely pioneer, crafted from the unexpected – sheep's milk. This unique drink, unveiled in Louisville, Kentucky, is turning heads and taste buds with its sustainable twist on a classic spirit.
Louisville resident Kirsten Schofield, who attended the tasting event at 21c Museum & Hotel, was impressed by the commitment to both quality and sustainability. "It's about knowing where your drink comes from," she said, "and seeing these happy, healthy sheep used in the process makes it even more appealing."
Blacklion's story begins with Tan and Tim Spittle, sheep farmers in the United Kingdom. Vodka lovers at heart, they wondered, "Why not sheep's milk?" After four years of research and development, their vision became reality.
"This vodka uses whey, a waste product from cheese-making," explained Tim. "It's sustainable, delicious, and embodies good farming practices – the future of our industry."
Kentucky wasn't just a lucky landing spot. "This state knows spirits," said Tim. "The passion here resonates with our own, and we're excited to be part of it."
Schofield echoed the sentiment, "Louisville doesn't often get first dibs on unique products, so it's thrilling to have Blacklion call it home."
Later this year, Blacklion will open its doors to an open farm and distillery near Lexington. Visitors can meet the fluffy inspiration behind the vodka and savor the smooth taste firsthand.
Blacklion Vodka is more than just a drink; it's a story of innovation, sustainability, and a shared passion for spirits. In Kentucky's heartland, this wooly revolution is just getting started, one sip at a time.
