The University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, alongside esteemed partners, is hosting the 2024 Spring Fencing School. This educational program caters to agricultural professionals, farmers, homeowners, and anyone seeking to gain valuable knowledge and skills in proper fencing techniques.
Held at two convenient locations – Morehead State University on April 23rd and the Graves County Cooperative Extension office in Mayfield, Kentucky on April 25th – the Spring Fencing School offers a comprehensive curriculum.
"Fencing plays a vital role in farm safety and livestock management," emphasizes Chris Teutsch, Associate Professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the UK Research and Education Center in Princeton. "This program is designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge to effectively install and maintain fencing on their property, regardless of their background."
The morning sessions delve into critical topics such as:
- Understanding various fencing types and their associated costs
- Mastering the fundamentals of fence construction
- Utilizing electric fencing for enhanced security
- Exploring innovative fencing technologies
- Familiarizing oneself with Kentucky's relevant fence laws
Following the informative morning session, the afternoon transforms into a hands-on workshop. Participants will gain practical experience through activities including:
- Implementing safety protocols for proper fence construction
- Conducting layout and post-driving demonstrations
- Constructing H-braces for secure fence support
- Mastering knot tying, splicing, and insulator installation techniques
- Learning methods for installing Stay-Tuff fixed-knot fencing and high-tensile electric fencing
Both events conclude with a dedicated Q&A session at 4:30 PM, allowing participants to address any lingering questions. Pre-registration is highly encouraged at least one week prior to the chosen session date. Registration fees are $35 per person and cover essential materials, refreshments, and a catered lunch. Participants are advised to bring safety glasses and hearing protection for the hands-on workshop.
The Spring Fencing School empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently build and maintain secure fencing for their agricultural operations or personal property.
