UN backs US pork industry on antimicrobial use

The United Nations (UN) has decided against imposing mandatory on-farm reductions of antimicrobials, a decision hailed by the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC). This choice underscores a shift towards stewardship programs rather than rigid mandates, aligning with NPPC's advocacy for science-based approaches to veterinary care in the pork industry.

Dr. Ashley Johnson, NPPC's director of food policy, emphasized that the health of pigs is paramount as it directly correlates with the safety of pork products.

The UN's stance prevents the potential imposition of a 30% global reduction in on-farm antimicrobials by 2030, which could have compromised animal care and food safety.

The UN declaration strengthens the role of veterinarians on farms, promoting a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) that allows for tailored health strategies to ensure both animal and human health. This relationship is crucial for determining the judicious use of antimicrobials in pork production.

The pork industry's participation in the One Health initiative demonstrates its commitment to optimizing health outcomes across ecosystems, reinforcing the need for a balanced approach to antimicrobial use.

NPPC's continued support for increased antimicrobial stewardship highlights its dedication to advancing animal health and safeguarding the food supply while minimizing antimicrobial resistance.
