Kentucky's agritech sector is blossoming! International grower Bosch Berries is investing nearly $50 million to establish its first US greenhouse operation in Somerset, creating 28 jobs and bringing sustainable strawberry production to the state.
Governor Beshear hailed this venture as a testament to Kentucky's appeal in the agritech industry. "This incredible investment marks a strategic step for Bosch Berries and signifies the opportunities our state offers," he said.
Bosch Berries, a family-owned Dutch company with 90 years of experience, acquired the existing AppHarvest facility in Somerset. They plan to enhance the infrastructure, implement cutting-edge technology, and optimize efficiency to maximize strawberry production. The 30-acre greenhouse, operational since 2022, can house 1 million strawberry plants at a time.
"We're thrilled to become part of the Somerset community," said Tijmen and Wouter van den Bosch, co-directors. "With our expertise and planned advancements, we aim to make this one of the most successful greenhouses of its kind." They emphasize their commitment to "better berries," prioritizing taste, freshness, sustainability, and year-round availability.
Local leaders expressed excitement about Bosch Berries' arrival. Judge/Executive Marshall Todd sees it as an opportunity to cultivate both berries and community relationships, while Mayor Alan Keck applauds their commitment to fresh produce using advanced technology.
This investment builds on Kentucky's recent economic boom, with Governor Beshear announcing over 1,000 new economic projects exceeding $30 billion in investments and creating over 51,800 jobs in his term. Notably, Kentucky has emerged as a leader in electric vehicle battery production, attracting major investments from Ford, Toyota, and others.
Gov. Beshear also highlighted the state's record-high surplus, budget, and job creation, as well as credit rating upgrades and recognition for economic development success. He recently launched the "Supply Kentucky" initiative to further stimulate job growth and supply chain security for Kentucky businesses.
Bosch Berries' arrival is a significant development for Kentucky's agriculture sector. Not only does it create jobs and contribute to economic growth, but it also introduces sustainable, year-round strawberry production, potentially benefiting both consumers and the state's agricultural landscape.
