KY farm leaders gather for annual summit

By Blake Jackson

On Friday, July 12, 2024, the Generation Bridge Core Leadership Committee kicked off their annual event at The Center for Rural Development with an evening of registration followed by a Welcome Dinner at The Virginia. Rob McClanahan, Chair of the Committee, welcomed attendees, and Jonathan Shell, Commissioner of Agriculture, delivered a keynote address.

The agenda continued Saturday, July 13, beginning with morning registration and a Group Breakfast at The Center for Rural Development's South Hall. Katie Cecil-Pedigo, Secretary of the Core Leadership Committee, extended greetings before a Legislative Update Panel provided insights into current agricultural policies.

Educational sessions commenced at 10:00 a.m., offering diverse topics in three breakout sessions. Ballroom A hosted a discussion on Succession Planning, emphasizing the importance of transitioning farming operations across generations.

In Ballroom D, county Farm Bureau presidents shared best practices for building robust county boards, featuring insights from past award-winning leaders.

Simultaneously, Ballroom E held an Advocacy Workshop led by a panel of resolution committee members, educating attendees on the significance of policy resolutions and encouraging submissions for review.

Following educational sessions, participants picked up boxed lunches at the Theatre Lobby before embarking on Afternoon Educational Farm Tours from 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. These tours offered practical insights into local farming practices and community engagement initiatives.

The event exemplified Generation Bridge's commitment to fostering leadership and advocacy within Kentucky's agricultural community.

By providing a platform for education, networking, and policy discussion, the gathering empowered attendees to contribute actively to the future of agriculture in their counties and beyond.
