In a special ceremony, Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles, alongside dairy farmers, producers, and industry representatives, signed a proclamation designating June as Dairy Month in Kentucky. The proclamation serves as recognition and appreciation for the hard work and resilience demonstrated by Kentucky's dairy industry.
Commissioner Quarles emphasized the dairy farmers' adaptability and their continuous provision of wholesome and nutritious dairy products despite the ever-evolving agricultural landscape. June was chosen as the ideal time to celebrate Dairy Month and honor the dedication and commitment of Kentucky's dairy farmers.
The dairy cattle industry in Kentucky has witnessed an increase in numbers, with an additional 1,000 dairy cows recorded in 2023. This marks the first year-over-year increase since 1986. These 45,000 dairy cows play a vital role in producing milk—the Official Beverage of Kentucky—and contribute to the creation of delectable dairy products such as ice cream and artisan cheeses. Kentucky dairy farmers ensure that families across the state have access to the essential calcium, protein, vitamins, and minerals necessary for a healthy and active lifestyle.
Kentucky's dairy cows collectively produce over 107 million gallons of milk annually, positioning milk as the eighth-ranked agricultural product in the state. The sales of dairy products generate substantial revenue, with dairy producers receiving over $244 billion in cash receipts. Additionally, each dairy cow contributes to an economic ripple effect of more than $13,700 per year. Notably, Barren County boasts the highest number of dairy cows, followed by Adair, Logan, Christian, and Todd counties.
The Kentucky Dairy Development Council (KDDC) expressed their admiration for all dairy farms in the state and recognized the relentless efforts of dairy farmers in bringing wholesome milk to the marketplace. The KDDC also highlighted the importance of consumers in sustaining the dairy industry's growth. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture plays a crucial role in supporting dairy farmers and processors by facilitating new market opportunities and organizing dairy cattle shows throughout the state.
