Relief Granted to Farmers, More Support Needed

Relief Granted to Farmers, More Support Needed

By Jamie Martin

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has issued a statement highlighting both relief and frustration among the farming community.

The resolution temporarily extends the 2018 Farm Bill, providing much-needed economic and disaster assistance to family farmers and ranchers facing various adversities.

NFU President Rob Larew expressed relief that this resolution mitigates some immediate hardships caused by extreme weather events, high input costs, and market volatility.

However, he also pointed out that the resolution is only a stopgap measure and that farmers and ranchers warrant better and more enduring solutions from Congress.

Originally, a bipartisan agreement had proposed more comprehensive measures, including significant agriculture and food security provisions such as the allowance for nationwide year-round sales of E15 ethanol blends.

Such measures would have offered greater market opportunities for farmers, reduced environmental emissions, and increased domestic energy security.
