The 2023 Fall Kentucky Beginning Grazing School is a two-day event that will be held on September 27-28 at the Woodford County Extension office and the UK C. Oran Little Research Farm in Versailles. The program is geared toward livestock producers who are new to grazing, but it will also be beneficial for experienced producers.
The curriculum for the first day of the school will cover topics such as soil fundamentals, rotational grazing techniques, optimizing nutritional balance on pasturelands, and grazing arithmetic principles. Attendees will also visit a local grazing operation to see how these practices are being implemented in a real-world setting.
The second day of the school will focus on more advanced topics such as electric fencing for grazing control, offset strategies, soil and hay sampling, effective forage plant cultivation, and grazing management strategies. Attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss appropriate forage species selections to create a holistic grazing system.
In addition to classroom instruction, the school will also offer hands-on learning opportunities. Attendees will have the chance to set up small paddocks, learn about portable and seasonal water systems, and determine optimal stocking rates. They will also have the opportunity to observe and dissect the previous day's hands-on grazing exercise.
