Bear Alert: Increased Black Bear Sightings Across Kentucky

Wildlife authorities in Kentucky are raising awareness about the growing number of black bear sightings across the state, cautioning the public to remain vigilant as encounters with bears are becoming more likely, particularly during early summer.

The dispersal of young male bears from their primary ranges in eastern Kentucky prompts their presence in various locations, including farms, rural areas, and even within town boundaries. Recent reports indicate sightings in eastern, southeastern, and southcentral parts of the state, including the Bluegrass region.

John Hast, a wildlife biologist and bear specialist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, explains that young male bears may unintentionally venture into more populated areas as they explore new territory and encounter humans for the first time. Although generally wary of people, these bears tend to move out of populated areas on their own, often during nighttime when human activity is lower.

While black bears typically exhibit a natural fear of people and dogs, the public is advised not to approach or feed them to avoid any negative interactions. It is essential to remove potential food sources and discourage bears from lingering in populated areas. Residents are encouraged to secure garbage, store pet food indoors, and clean and safely store barbecue grills. Feeding bears intentionally is illegal in Kentucky.

If a bear is encountered, it is crucial to maintain a safe distance and refrain from approaching. If the bear poses an immediate threat, local law enforcement should be contacted. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife emphasizes responsible practices to prevent conflicts with wildlife, including information and guidelines available on their website.

As the bear population expands in Kentucky, authorities prioritize regulated hunting seasons in designated areas to ensure a sustainable and healthy population. The public is urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to minimize bear encounters, fostering a safe coexistence with these magnificent creatures.

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website, fw.ky.gov, offers a wealth of valuable information on black bears. By simply searching for the keywords "black bear" on the website, visitors can access a comprehensive repository of knowledge.

Individuals can also visit www.bearwise.org for additional resources and insights on black bears. Whether you're seeking to learn more about their behavior, habitat, or conservation efforts, these online platforms provide a valuable resource for exploring the world of black bears.
