Digital Tools Support Soil Health Monitoring

Digital Tools Support Soil Health Monitoring

By Jamie Martin

Technology is transforming agriculture, especially in the area of regenerative farming. The TUdi project has unveiled a new set of digital tools designed to help farmers restore and maintain healthy soils across various regions.

TUdi focuses on building and applying soil-restoration strategies in Europe, China, and New Zealand. A key part of this effort is the launch of six new Decision Support Tools (DSTs), which are now available online. These tools allow farmers to track soil health using real-time data and images, enabling more precise monitoring and better long-term planning.

The DSTs cover key soil areas - erosion, fertilization, compaction, carbon levels, soil biology, and soil structure. Farmers can upload photos and input field data to get tailored insights into changes in soil condition over time.

In addition to the DSTs, the project has developed the Socio-Economic Toolkit to Support Soil Restoration (SEST). This tool helps farmers understand the financial impact of restoration methods, offering insights into the costs and benefits of adopting regenerative practices.

"Sensor-based systems, AI and real-time analytics are transforming how dairies make everyday decisions,” said one researcher involved in the project.

The tools are available through the TUdi app for smartphones and web platforms. The SEST toolkit is accessible via its own application called TUdi and SEST, designed for desktop use.

Demonstration videos for both DSTs and SEST are hosted on the TUdi website and YouTube channel in English, with more languages to be added soon. These innovations aim to support global farmers in achieving more sustainable, data-driven agriculture for the future.

The TUdi project is a joint initiative of the European Union and China,.
