Kentucky's Ag Tag program is nearing a significant milestone: $1 million in donations. Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell is calling on Kentuckians to support the program by donating $10 when renewing their farm vehicle license plates.
Last year's record-breaking $931,201.81 donation total highlights the generosity of Kentucky farmers, and this year's goal aims even higher.
Ag Tag funds are divided equally among the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA), Kentucky FFA, and Kentucky 4-H, directly supporting agricultural youth and farm families.
Commissioner Jonathan Shell, a former FFA member, emphasizes the profound impact these organizations have on young people's lives, fostering leadership skills and shaping future agricultural leaders. 4-H shares this impactful role, providing life-changing experiences for Kentucky's youth.
The $10 donation, while seemingly small, collectively creates a substantial impact. These funds bolster Kentucky's agricultural future by investing in the next generation of farmers and agricultural professionals.
The KDA utilizes its share for various programs, including Ag Athlete of the Year awards, the Kentucky Leopold Conservation Award, Kentucky Women in Agriculture initiatives, and the University of Kentucky Grain and Forage Center of Excellence.
A new KDA program will incentivize schools to incorporate Kentucky-grown products into school meals, further connecting local agriculture with communities.
Half of the 4-H and FFA donations return directly to local councils and chapters, enabling community leaders to fund camps, leadership programs, and other essential activities.
These funds provide scholarships for 4-H camp, support travel for educational experiences, and allow FFA chapters to address local needs, such as providing FFA jackets or covering leadership event travel costs.
The Commissioner emphasizes the unselfish spirit of FFA and 4-H, highlighting their dedication to preparing youth for the challenges facing agriculture.
The KDA simultaneously promotes Kentucky farmers and emphasizes agriculture's crucial role in the state's present and future.
This year's Ag Tag campaign theme, "Bluegrass Beginnings, Boundless Futures," reflects the commitment to securing Kentucky agriculture's future by investing in its youth.
As Kentuckians renew their Ag Tags, Commissioner Jonathan Shell encourages them to contribute the $10 donation. Building on last year's record, the goal is to exceed $1 million and ensure a brighter future for Kentucky agriculture.
