The race for Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner has become more partisan than ever before, with candidates focusing on issues outside of agriculture. Republican Jonathan Shell is focusing on hot-button issues such as abortion and fighting "woke liberals," while Democrat Sierra Enlow has received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood.
Some experts, such as Jeffery Hall, former state executive director for the USDA's Farm Service Agency in Kentucky, believe that the partisan nature of the race is unfortunate and takes away from the real issues in agriculture. Scott Smith, retired dean of agriculture at the University of Kentucky, agrees, saying that the race should be about who can best represent all farmers and promote agriculture in Kentucky, not about partisan politics.
