Kentucky Ag Connection - 01/14/2022

Kentucky State University's USDA 1890 scholarship is open for fall 2022 applications until March 4.

The scholarship, which is available to students who attend an 1890 land grant university and are studying food and agricultural sciences or related disciplines, was created by the 2018 Farm Bill.

The scholarship's goals are to:

- Increase the number of graduates with baccalaureate degrees in the food and agricultural sciences and related fields; and

- Support scholars intent on pursuing a career in the food and agricultural sciences and related fields in order to meet the technologically advanced needs of the 21st century food and agricultural systems workforce.

As of January, 55 Kentucky State students are recipients of the USDA 1890 scholarship, including 35 women and 20 men. Forty-three of the recipients are Black, 10 are white, one is American Indian, and one is Pacific Islander.

Scholarship recipients have come to Kentucky State from 14 U.S. states and territories: Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and Tennessee.

All students have tuition paid for and most are receiving a fully funded education.

"The 1890 scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to continue my education, while simultaneously pursuing my passion," said Jocelyn Marables, an agriculture, food and environment major from Louisville.

Attending Kentucky State is important to her, Marables said, because many of her family members attended the university before her.

"Receiving the 1890 scholarship has offered me a once-in-a-lifetime experience," she said.

Kentucky State students can apply for the USDA 1890 scholarships at the beginning of each semester. Requirements include:

- A 2.8 GPA

- A written essay on their intent to pursue a career in the food and agricultural sciences, including a career in agribusiness, energy and renewable fuels, or financial

- Recommendation letters from counselors or faculty

- Be approved by a scholarship committee
