Beshear unveils Lewis ridge hydro project

By Blake Jackson

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear unveiled plans for a pumped storage hydropower facility in Bell County, highlighting its potential economic impact and job creation in the region's agricultural sector.

The Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project, supported by an up-to-$81 million federal grant, promises to generate approximately 1,500 construction jobs and 30 operations positions, while also supplying enough energy to power nearly 67,000 homes annually. Beshear emphasized the significance of such infrastructure projects in fostering rural economic development, particularly in areas historically reliant on coal production.

Beshear further underscored the state's commitment to agricultural growth, celebrating initiatives like the G.R.A.N.T. Program, which allocates funds to support community projects. Notable selections include investments in educational institutions like West Kentucky Community and Technical College, emphasizing workforce development crucial for the agricultural sector's sustainability.

Additionally, the announcement of a Build-Ready location in Adair County signals Kentucky's dedication to facilitating investment opportunities conducive to agricultural expansion.

Moreover, Beshear recognized strides in honoring Kentucky's women veterans, showcasing the state's appreciation for their contributions, including those within agricultural communities.

The unveiling of portraits commemorating outstanding women in Kentucky's history, scheduled for the Kentucky Women Remembered exhibit, reflects the diverse roles women play, including in agriculture.

In terms of leadership, Beshear announced appointments aimed at bolstering public safety and supporting initiatives combating substance abuse, issues intertwined with rural communities' agricultural landscape. Notably, the opening of recovery housing centers, such as The Journey in Eastern Kentucky, addresses critical needs within agricultural regions grappling with substance use disorders.

Beshear's update on recent severe weather underscores the agricultural sector's vulnerability to environmental challenges. While the focus remains on immediate relief efforts, discussions around disaster preparedness are crucial for safeguarding agricultural livelihoods.

In celebrating achievements, Beshear acknowledged the Simmons College women's basketball team's historic win, underscoring the importance of sports programs in fostering community pride and unity, especially in rural areas reliant on agriculture.

Overall, Beshear's address underscores the intertwined nature of agriculture with economic development, community resilience, and cultural identity in Kentucky.
