Kentucky kicks off its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Week from March 4th to 8th, offering residents a chance to connect with local farmers and enjoy fresh, seasonal produce.
"CSAs are a fantastic way to support Kentucky's farm families," said Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell, highlighting the program's ability to bring locally grown products directly to consumers' homes.
This long-standing model allows consumers to subscribe directly to farms, receiving a regular supply of diverse products throughout the growing season. The Kentucky Proud initiative, partnering with various organizations, is promoting this year's CSA Week with an online platform connecting consumers with participating farms.
CSA shares typically include various items like vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats, herbs, and even flowers. Consumers receive boxes or baskets filled with the farm's harvest, with options for customization based on size, product selection, and subscription duration.
This year boasts the highest participation yet, with over 76 CSA farms offering a diverse selection of Kentucky's freshest products.
Highlighting the importance of supporting local farmers, Bethany Prekopa, from the Kentucky Horticulture Council, emphasizes the event's ability to showcase the state's diverse agriculture while promoting the benefits of CSAs for both consumers and farmers.
For those seeking organic options, Katie Harvey, from the Organic Association of Kentucky, points out how CSAs support family farms utilizing sustainable practices while providing access to healthy food and contributing to a resilient local food system.
Dr. Ashton Potter Wright, from The Food Connection, emphasizes the variety and abundance offered by Kentucky CSAs and the positive impact consumer participation has on both access to nutritious food and the local economy.
Finally, Dr. Tim Woods, from the University of Kentucky Extension, emphasizes the health benefits of CSAs, highlighting that only 1 in 6 Kentuckians meet their daily recommended fruit and vegetable intake. Choosing a CSA can significantly increase access to fresh, healthy produce.
Kentucky Proud's CSA Week encourages residents to explore the benefits of supporting local farmers while enjoying fresh, seasonal produce throughout the year.
