Fall harvest season in Kentucky a family tradition

Fall harvest season in Kentucky a family tradition

By Blake Jackson

Central Kentucky farmers are gearing up for harvest season, which typically runs from late September to mid-November, weather permitting. For many of these families, farming is a multi-generational business, and they have spent years perfecting their craft.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of my or fathers, my grandparents that did this," said farmer James Lyons. "We get to carry on a tradition and pass down the knowledge and the love for it."

Lyons believes that many people don't understand the complexity of farming. Farmers are responsible for a wide range of tasks, from weather forecasting to mechanics to financial advising. They also take on a lot of risk, as their success depends on factors largely outside of their control.

Despite the challenges, farming is a job that many people are passionate about. Farmers know that they are playing a vital role in feeding the world, and they take pride in their work.

"Only 2% of the nation are farmers, and so 2% are feeding the 98% of the nation," said Scott County Extension Agriculture Agent Brittany Brewer.

Central Kentucky farmers make significant contributions to the local economy and the global food supply. Their hard work and dedication help to ensure that people around the world have access to safe and nutritious food.
