Kentucky farmers face many challenges, including the unpredictability of the weather and the physical demands of the job. These challenges can lead to mental health issues for farmers.
One organization, Raising Hope, is working to make farmers feel more valued and cared for, and to prevent them from taking their own lives. Raising Hope has developed Challenge Coins, a symbol to help others know that the work they are doing is important.
Raising Hope also works to reduce the stigma around mental health problems in the farming community. Agriculture nurse Cheryl Witt, who grew up on a farm, says that many farmers are reluctant to seek help for mental health problems because of this stigma.
Quint Pottinger, a farmer in LaRue County, Ky., encourages other farmers to not suffer in silence. He says that there is always a way forward, and that suicide is never the answer.
Raising Hope says signs of suicidal behavior include talking about wanting to die, feeling empty, hopeless or lacking a reason to live. For those who need help, call or text 988 for free and confidential support.
