Kentucky ag athlete of the year applications open

Kentucky ag athlete of the year applications open

By Blake Jackson

Calling all Kentucky high school seniors who are passionate about agriculture and athletics! Applications are now open for the prestigious Ag Athlete of the Year award, which recognizes outstanding students and comes with a scholarship opportunity.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior
  • Participate in at least one KHSAA sport during the 2023-2024 school year
  • Be accepted to a college, university, or trade school following graduation
  • Demonstrate active involvement in agriculture

While an agricultural major is not required, preference is given to students attending colleges within Kentucky.

Elizabeth Gordon, Division Director of the Education and Outreach Division for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, emphasizes that involvement can go beyond traditional farm work.

"We encourage applications from students involved in any form of agriculture," explained Gordon. "This includes students working on family farms, neighboring farms, or even those with aspirations for future careers in the agricultural industry."

She highlights the diverse backgrounds of past winners, including those from urban areas like Louisville and Lexington.

Two winners, one male and one female, will be awarded $2,000 scholarships and announced at the 2024 UK Healthcare Boys' Sweet 16 in March. Additionally, four other students will receive $1,000 scholarships.

The Ag Athlete of the Year scholarships are funded through the KDA's "Ag Tag" Program, supported by voluntary donations from motorists purchasing farm vehicle license plates.

Applications are open until December 31st. Interested students can find more information and apply through the KHSAA website.
