94 million Cattle Reported on Farms Nationwide

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its July 2025 Cattle Inventory Report, offering new insights into the U.S. cattle industry. As of July 1, 2025, there are 94.2 million head of cattle and calves on farms across the country.

Of these, 38.1 million are cows and heifers that have calved, showing their continued role in growing the cattle population. Beef cows number 28.7 million, while milk cows total 9.45 million, reflecting the ongoing need for both meat and dairy production.

The estimated calf crop for 2025 is 33.1 million, showing the volume of new calves expected this year. The number of cattle on feed, which are raised for beef, is listed at 13.0 million head.

To prepare this report, the USDA’s NASS surveyed more than 17,900 farm operators during the first half of July. Producers submitted their data by mail, internet, or phone, sharing herd counts and calf estimates.

This is the first July cattle report since 2023, offering an updated look at national livestock numbers. These figures are important for guiding agriculture planning, food supply, and livestock economics.

The report helps farmers, ranchers, and decision-makers understand current trends in beef and dairy production.
