Kentucky Association of Environmental Education Launches Inspiring Kentucky Green Schools Program

The Kentucky Association for Environmental Education (KAEE) has introduced an exciting new initiative, the Kentucky Green Schools program, aiming to ignite a passion for environmental stewardship among students. By encouraging active participation and providing themed investigations, the program empowers students to lead efforts in reducing their school's environmental impact and fostering a sustainable learning environment.

The Kentucky Green Schools program offers five student-driven investigations, covering various aspects of environmental conservation. Through these investigations, students assess energy consumption, evaluate environmental quality, examine school sites, analyze waste management processes, and investigate water sources and conservation practices. By conducting these investigations, students gain practical knowledge and are inspired to develop action projects based on their findings, taking steps towards creating a greener and healthier world.

KAEE aims to collaborate with local community partners to provide support, resources, and guidance to participating schools throughout Kentucky. This partnership will facilitate environmental education opportunities and foster connections between schools and their local community, strengthening relationships and promoting environmental awareness.

Participating schools have the opportunity to receive recognition at both the state and national levels. Statewide recognition includes media coverage, a school plaque, or a school flag, depending on the level and duration of involvement. Moreover, schools can be considered for national recognition through the US Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools program, coordinated by the Kentucky Environmental Education Council. The KAEE website and virtual environmental education resources map will showcase both participating schools and community partners.

Katherine Bullock, Education Director of KAEE, expressed excitement about the program, emphasizing its promotion of eco-literacy, investigative skills, teamwork, leadership, and sustainable practices. Educators interested in learning more about the Kentucky Green Schools program and how their schools can participate can visit kaee.org/greenschools or contact katherine@kaee.org. Joining this initiative allows schools across the Commonwealth to contribute to a more environmentally-conscious and sustainable future, inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.
