Meat Processors Seek Inclusion in Ag Workforce

Meat Processors Seek Inclusion in Ag Workforce

By Jamie Martin

The Meat Institute is calling on the federal government to include meat and poultry processors in its agricultural labour solutions, emphasizing the critical role processors play in rural economies and food supply chains.

Julie Anna Potts, President and CEO of the Meat Institute, said, “President Trump has an opportunity to solve the agriculture labor crisis that has challenged our farmers and ranchers for decades. As reforms are considered, we urge the Trump Administration to include meat and poultry packers and processors in his efforts to improve agriculture worker programs.”

Processors support over 850,000 farmers and ranchers by providing essential market access. Additionally, they help meet consumer demand for beef, pork, and poultry, which are purchased by 98% of American households.

From small to large businesses, these companies drive rural economies and offer competitive entry-level wages ranging from $16 to $24 per hour, including benefits.

The Meat Institute is advocating for updates to the H-2A visa program and modernization of E-Verify to allow processors consistent access to a legal and year-round workforce.

There is also bipartisan support for this move. The Agricultural Labor Working Group, led by Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) and Rep. Donald Davis (D-NC), released a 2024 report urging reforms. “One thing that has become clear is the need for dairy producers, meat processors, sugar processors, forestry, ranchers, and others to have access to a steady and legal workforce,” the report stated.

Processors want to be part of long-term workforce solutions that support farmers, rural jobs, and America’s food system.
