Nationwide Support Grows for Farm Security Strategy

Nationwide Support Grows for Farm Security Strategy

By Jamie Martin

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins introduced the National Farm Security Action Plan to protect U.S. farmland and food supplies. Many leaders and farm groups are showing strong support for the plan.

Officials say foreign countries buying American farmland is a major risk. Defense and law enforcement leaders agree that food security is closely linked to national security. They believe this plan will help stop foreign threats and keep food systems safe.

Some states like Alabama and Indiana already face high levels of foreign land ownership. These lawmakers say stronger national rules are needed to prevent foreign adversaries from gaining control of U.S. land.

State governors and agriculture commissioners also support the plan. They say protecting farmland keeps rural economies strong. Leaders from Iowa, Arkansas, and other states note that their states already have strong protections and welcome national support.

Farm groups like the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and state-level associations say the plan helps protect the entire food system. They support ideas like stopping foreign animal diseases, defending critical farm supplies like fertilizer, and keeping foreign buyers away from land and agricultural research.

This plan also helps young farmers by making farmland more available and helps improve supply chains to avoid future food shortages.
