NestFresh Leads Humane Egg Innovation

NestFresh Leads Humane Egg Innovation

By Jamie Martin

NestFresh, a leader in humane egg farming, is launching its new Humanely Hatched™ packaging in early July 2025. The updated design marks a U.S. industry milestone, highlighting the brand’s use of in-ovo sexing technology verified by Certified Humane® standards.

Humanely Hatched™ is NestFresh’s exclusive label for eggs from hens selected before hatch using in-ovo technology. This innovation avoids the long-criticized practice of hatching and euthanizing male chicks, instead identifying male embryos before incubation begins.

“NestFresh didn't just adopt this technology—we spearheaded the effort to bring it to market in the U.S.,” said Jasen Urena, Executive VP of NestFresh. “Humanely Hatched™ represents years of collaboration, innovation, and commitment to doing what's right.”

The in-ovo technology, Cheggy, developed by Agri Advanced Technologies (AAT), has already been used globally on over 230 million eggs. By preventing unnecessary hatching of male chicks, the system improves efficiency while upholding strong animal welfare values.

Farmers like Joe Klein feel proud to be part of this change. “It gives me a lot of pride to know that we are doing something really important with Humanely Hatched hens on our farms,” he said.

Backed by Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the Certified Humane® verification ensures the process meets the highest animal welfare standards.

The packaging uses recyclable materials and reflects NestFresh’s long-term commitment to sustainability and transparency. This step also aligns with the growing consumer demand for more humane food systems.

With this launch, NestFresh continues to lead in ethical egg production. Consumers can find their products nationwide at major retailers such as Whole Foods, Publix, and H-E-B.
