Small, Minority Farmers Learn High Tunnel Installation

Kentucky State University personnel partnered with Tony Brooks of Turner Brooks Farm in Richmond to educate farmers on high tunnels and to introduce them to resources available to them, such as the Small-Scale Farm Grant Program administered by Kentucky State University in partnership with the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board.

Representatives from organizations such as the National Center for Appropriate Technology, the National Resource Conservation Service, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency spoke to farmers. Dr. Shawn Lucas of KSU demonstrated several small farm soil preparation and management options as well as high tunnel maintenance, specifically replacing plastic on high tunnels. Tony Brooks, a minority farmer, also shared the history and vision of his farm.
