U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins is backing a lawsuit from the Trump Administration aimed at California’s egg laws. The lawsuit says that California’s rules hurt egg producers nationwide and raise prices for all American consumers.
The Department of Justice has filed the lawsuit against California state officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom. It argues that the laws create unnecessary restrictions on how eggs must be produced. These rules affect farmers outside California and are believed to violate the U.S. Constitution.
Secretary Rollins has taken many steps to help American poultry farmers and reduce the cost of eggs. In February, she announced a five-point plan focused on fighting the spread of avian flu, boosting egg production, and making prices lower for everyone. Her plan includes better disease response, help for farmers, and improvements in how eggs are moved and sold.
The cost of eggs has gone down by 63 percent. This drop shows that USDA’s work is making a real difference in people’s lives.
Secretary Rollins says that state laws should not interfere with national food markets. She believes farmers and families should not pay more because of rules from just one state.
