In a remarkable initiative to honor the heritage of African American rural communities, Lexington is bringing attention to historically significant areas. At the forefront of this endeavor are Jojuana Leavell-Greene and her son James, who are pioneering Black agriculture and landscaping in the region. Their remarkable venture, Greene Landing, located on Cadentown Lane, is breathing new life into the once-thriving neighborhood by cultivating an immersive experience that connects people with the land and history.
The journey of Greene Landing began in 2019 when Leavell-Greene made the decision to till the land instead of selling it. Today, the site flourishes with a variety of fruits, vegetables, and vibrant flowers, including the growth of mustard dimes. The objective of this Black-owned Garden is to showcase the rich natural resources and environmental benefits that Kentucky offers while preserving its rural culture.
Through conservation grants, Greene Landing facilitates educational programs for young individuals, teaching them the art of growing produce and fostering a deeper connection to the historic land. By empowering the younger generation with essential agricultural skills, they hope to instill a sense of appreciation for the past and a commitment to sustainable farming practices.
James Leavell-Greene, the manager of Greene Landing, emphasizes the importance of understanding the food we consume and its impact on our bodies. By actively participating in the cultivation process, individuals gain insight into the historical significance of farming, providing a glimpse into the past and fostering a connection to bygone eras.
Greene Landing aims to become a valuable resource for agriculture and the Cadentown community. By reviving the traditions and wisdom of the past, they are sowing the seeds of a brighter and more sustainable future. Through their efforts, the Leavell-Greene family is bridging the gap between generations and ensuring that the rural culture of Lexington's historically African American communities continues to thrive.
The vision of Greene Landing extends far beyond the boundaries of their garden, as they hope to inspire others to embrace their heritage, connect with the land, and preserve the legacy of their communities.
