Kentucky Department of Agriculture Empowers Future Leaders Through Summer Internship Program

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) is fostering the development of future leaders in the agricultural field through its summer internship program. Under the guidance of Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Ryan Quarles, eight college students have been welcomed to the KDA campus for an immersive learning experience.

The internship program offers students a unique opportunity to work alongside KDA employees and gain hands-on experience in various occupational fields related to agriculture. By providing firsthand exposure to the governmental process and the diverse programs of the department, the internship equips students with valuable insights and knowledge, paving the way for successful careers in agriculture and related fields.

The eight-week internship program caters to students pursuing majors directly or indirectly related to agriculture, including disciplines such as education, computer science, marketing, public relations, and pre-law. Through collaboration with KDA employees, interns have the chance to explore different facets of the agricultural industry, furthering their understanding of the field and considering future career prospects within the department.

Over the years, the internship program has proven to be a stepping stone for many participants, with some former interns eventually joining the ranks of KDA employees. This testament to the program's efficacy highlights its significant role in shaping the future of agriculture in Kentucky.

The 2023 cohort of interns comprises a talented group of individuals from esteemed universities, including the University of Kentucky, Western Kentucky University, and West Texas A&M. The interns, Morgynne Lunsford, Gracie Mika, Riley Milby, Landon Muse, Emery Poore, Braden Porter, Benjamin Williams, and Madison Wilmoth, are poised to make a lasting impact on the agricultural landscape.

Through the KDA summer internship program, Commissioner Quarles and the department are nurturing the next generation of leaders in the agriculture sector, empowering them with the skills, knowledge, and connections necessary to drive innovation and progress in Kentucky's vibrant agricultural community.
