The University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and Morehead State University will offer a Yak Husbandry and Research Update on October 28, 2023. The free, one-day conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT at the Morehead State University Farm.
Yaks are a livestock species that are becoming more popular in Kentucky. They are gentle, yield lean meat, and have high-quality fiber. Yaks are also known for having a low environmental impact.
The conference will cover a variety of topics related to yak husbandry, including artificial insemination, grazing performance, fiber characteristics, and meat cutting. There will also be an open discussion at the end of the day.
The conference is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education producer grant.
“We want to develop science-based information that will help Kentucky producers get started with yak,” said Jeff Lehmkuhler, UK Department of Animal and Food Sciences professor and part of the joint project. “We are studying ways to improve herds, understand yak economics, and how yak perform in our rich, forage-based system.”
