Building Leaders: Students Receive Training for Success

The Division of Student Engagement and Campus Life recently hosted its annual Student Leadership Institute (SLI) empowering students with the skills necessary for leading and contributing to a team.

"The Student Leadership Institute allowed students to work together, learn together, and collaborate on various projects and initiatives for the upcoming school year," shared Director of Campus Life Katianna Yates. "Training was unique because each session placed special emphasis on mental health as it relates to student leadership. I am proud to say we have some of the best and brightest students on campus and I am excited to see that the upcoming school year holds."

Over 60 students who will lead in some capacity in the Student Government Association, Campus Activities Board, Royal Court, Class Officer, and Resident Assistants attended this year's Institute. Participants received tips on how to dress professionally, resolve conflict, and participated in team building activities. They heard from experts on topics that included effective student leadership, bridging the gap with alumni, how to run an effective meeting, and learned about Robert's Rules or Order.

Miana Wallace, who will serve as the 93rd Miss Kentucky State University, says she is excited to put into action this upcoming academic year what she has learned.

"I found the leadership institute to be motivating, eye-opening, and informative. I am so excited to implement some of the great things I learned for the upcoming school year."

The Institute concluded with a trip to Main Event in Louisville.

SLI is an annual six-day residential training program designed to educate and empower students. Click here to learn more about opportunities available for students at Kentucky State.
