Exploring Sustainability and Solar Energy in a Certified Organic Market Garden Farmhouse

Exploring Sustainability and Solar Energy in a Certified Organic Market Garden Farmhouse

OAK Field Day Tour: A Sustainable Solar Farmhouse and Organic Market Garden Farm Join Andy McDonald and Mehera Baugher on June 10th for a tour of Cedar Ring Greens, a Frankfort-based farm committed to sustainability for nearly two decades.

During the OAK Field Day, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the farm's sustainable components, including solar energy use, composting toilet and greywater systems, and minimal till systems of bed prep, seeding, and harvesting used in their diverse vegetable production.

Andy will guide participants through the farm's barn, packing shed, site-built walk-in cooler, and two small greenhouses they designed. He'll also provide insights into their passive solar design, solar electric and solar hot water, and on-farm home renovations.

Mehera will share the farm's certified organic market gardens, which use covered crop protection with row covers and tunnels, cover cropping in rotations for soil health, and hedgerows for pollinator biodiversity. This is a great opportunity for interested farmers and allied professionals to learn about sustainable agriculture practices firsthand.

Registration is required for the event, and participation is limited to 25 people. This Field Day is made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's (KDA) Office of Agricultural Marketing and Product Promotion through a Specialty Crop Block Grant. Don't miss out on this opportunity to visit Cedar Ring Greens and learn about sustainable farming practices on June 10th.
