Kentucky farmers were honored at the State Capitol for their contributions to the state. The event was sponsored by Raising Hope, a group that supports healthy lives on Kentucky farms.
Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles spoke on the importance of farming in Kentucky. He said that farming is the second-largest employer in the state and that he has been honored to represent Kentucky farmers in Frankfort, Washington DC, and abroad. He also thanked farmers for their contributions to the state's food supply system.
Babette Overman, coordinator of Raising Hope, said that the group was formed two and a half years ago in response to the rising suicide rate among farmers and farm families. She said that the group's goal is to show farmers how much they are appreciated and to create programs that will help farmers and farm families mentally and physically.
Overman said that Raising Hope offers a variety of services, including health screenings and mental health services. She said that the group has saved eight lives through its health screening services and that it has helped to establish the 9-8-8 mental health hotline in Kentucky.
The event at the State Capitol was a way to honor Kentucky farmers for their contributions to the state and to raise awareness of the resources available to farmers and farm families.
